Pat Powell, known as Patou, is a multi-award-winning Jamaican singer whose remarkable career spans over four decades and various continents. Recognized as one of Australia’s most accomplished vocal talents, Patou has built a reputation as an artist that many aspire to collaborate with. His unique vocal style combines soulful understatement with passionate expression, captivating audiences of all ages and delivering messages of joy and social justice through his music. Born in the UK to Jamaican parents, Pat faced racial adversity in both the UK and Australia. His formative years in Bristol during the 1960s and 70s were marked by challenges, including police persecution. Yet, it was during this tumultuous time that he discovered solace in Jamaican music and RnB. These early influences laid the foundation for his diverse musical palette, which would evolve as he toured Europe throughout the 1970s, performing various genres from ska to blues and hip-hop to reggae. By the 1980s, Patou had made a significant impact on Sydney's music scene, leading pioneering acts such as Caribbe and Club Ska. His commitment to his Caribbean roots while embracing contemporary sounds like hip-hop and electronica revitalized the Australian touring circuit. Patou’s performances quickly gained popularity, and he became a sought-after artist in the local music scene. Entering the 1990s, Patou established himself as a prominent studio artist, collaborating with notable musicians like James Freud, Jenny Morris, and Lisa Maxwell. He continued to perform with bands such as Lovetown and Ten Wedge while contributing to numerous singles. His talent caught the attention of international acts, leading to collaborations and support roles for renowned artists like James Brown, Queen, and Kylie Minogue. Touring extensively with Minogue, he showcased his vocal prowess in both solo and backing roles. Over his career, Patou has recorded more than 20 singles and one album, along with providing vocals for numerous artists. His performances extend beyond music; he has appeared in films such as Mad Max 3 and stage productions like Dealers Choice. Patou remains active in the industry, mentoring artists at different stages of their careers and engaging in commercial voice-over work, showcasing his commitment to nurturing talent in the music community. In June 2018, Patou released his debut album, "About Time," a culmination of his extensive experience and artistry. He views this project as a reflection of everyone he has worked with and learned from over the years. Currently, Patou is involved in various musical projects, including collaborations with bands like the Melbourne Ska Orchestra and creative ventures across genres, ensuring his influence and legacy continue to resonate in the music industry. His recent documentary, PATOU: In Black & White, which has received multiple awards, further highlights his journey and the discussions surrounding race and identity within his family and community.
