Terry Burgan

Terence (Terry) William Burgan was born on July 1, 1960, in Wales, UK, but his family relocated to Whyalla, Australia, in the late 1960s. Terry's artistic journey began at the age of 14 when he performed in Jesus Christ Superstar, showcasing his natural talent for singing and acting. He continued to hone his craft with roles in various theatrical productions throughout the 1970s, establishing himself as a versatile performer despite having no formal training. In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Terry excelled in sports, representing national and state soccer teams. However, a pivotal moment in his life came in 1978 when he picked up his brother's guitar, revealing a newfound talent for music. This shift led him to become a founding member of The Urban Guerillas in 1979, a band that released two singles and played regularly in local venues, laying the groundwork for his future musical endeavors. By 1983, Terry had moved to Sydney, where he joined the band The Cuckoos as a bass player. During his time with the band, they toured Australia and recorded two albums. The Cuckoos shared stages with prominent Australian acts such as Divinyls and Cold Chisel before disbanding in 1988. This period allowed Terry to gain invaluable experience and connections in the music industry, paving the way for his next venture as lead guitarist for the Firemen in 1990. While with the Firemen, Terry collaborated with notable songwriters and scriptwriters, including playwright Alex Broun. Together, they created THE ORACLE, an environmentally themed musical that showcased Terry's songwriting talents. He founded Sideswipe Productions with his wife, Michelle, to produce THE ORACLE, which premiered at the Belvoir Street Theatre in 1993 and later evolved into a full-scale production in 1995, receiving significant acclaim. Throughout the 1990s, Terry expanded his artistic repertoire by directing and producing various theatrical works, including HEMP: The Illicit Musical, which received standing ovations during its run. The Dispensary Theatre, which Terry established, became a vibrant hub for diverse performance art, hosting everything from cabarets to art exhibitions. However, due to challenges with local council support, the venue ultimately closed, leading to a temporary hiatus in Terry's musical pursuits. Despite these setbacks, Terry's songwriting skills remained sharp. He boasts a catalog of over 200 songs and has successfully produced three musicals over his 30-year career. His unique style, often characterized by left-of-center themes and catchy melodies, has drawn comparisons to Elton John and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Today, he collaborates with Pat Powell, merging his classic songwriting with Pat's industry expertise, creating a powerful duo poised for future success in the music landscape.
